I'm considering purchacing a 1998 Beneteau 352 with a Yanmar 27 engine. The engine has under 500 hours on it. It starts well but it is very noisey while idling. I would describe the noise as a distinct clacking noise with a frequency similar to the RPM. I have taken the stair cover off and found no obvious loose or banging parts. The insulation appears to be in good repair. However, it is not sufficent to dampen the noise. Otherwise, the engine appears to be well maintained and the owner says the engine has always sounded this way. I have spent time on other boats with Yanmar engines and while there has been a range of noise levels nothing compares to this. I would appreciate any ideas as to what this may be or, what I should be looking out for.
Cheers, Gerard
