Strip down raw water pump - question

Hi,

Recently purchased a second hand Oceanis 411 which has a Volvo Penta MD22P engine. The raw water pump has a leak so I've removed it from the engine. I'd like to strip it down so I can check the seals & bearings on the shaft.

I've seen the manual online which has a good schematic and talks about removing the split ring to get the shaft out. Its not clear if I have to remove the pulley first? (opposite end to the impeller). Photo attached might help although it doesn't show the pulley well!
The nut holding the pulley onto the shaft is pretty tight and I need to find a way of stopping the pulley rotating to remove it, concerned that putting it into a vice might damage the pulley surface and cause belt failures later. Am I on the right track?

thanks
Marcus
