Having completed a 14 week cruise this summer in our 36cc, I felt it was time to do some checking on certain components, the exhaust elbow on the Volvo 2030 and the Volvo shaft seal.
I was shocked to see how congested the exhaust elbow was. After failing to get rid of the carbon or calcium residue, I opted to fit a new one. (Ordered from Keypart, nearly 30% cheaper than my local Volvo dealer).
I was not so surprised at the state of the shaft seal as it had show signs of leakage at the start of the season. On removal I found that the lips of the seal were completely worn away, the way it had remained watertight was be means of the grease.
Moral of this story, if your vessel is around 10 years and uses these items, then check them now!!!!
By the way, the 36cc is brilliant for liveaboard for an extended period!
